Video Guide

Step 1

Identify the Problem:

Turn on the Game Boy and adjust the contrast to highlight the position of the vertical lines on the display.

Step 2

Disassemble the Game Boy:

Remove the six screws from the back using the tri-wing screwdriver.
Carefully open the housing into two halves whilst ensuring you don’t damage the ribbon cable.
Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to separate the front shell entirely.

Step 3

Access the Display Connector:

Remove the Phillips screws holding the screen board to the shell.
Gently pry up the board, being cautious of adhesive and the ribbon cable.
Remove the rubber strip at the bottom of the display and set it aside.
Peel off any adhesive left covering the ribbon cable connection.

Step 4

Reflow the Ribbon Cable Connections:

Reassemble partially:
  • Plug the ribbon cable back into the connector.
  • Flip the assembly flat and reinsert the batteries.
  • Turn the Game Boy on and adjust contrast to visualize the lines.
Carefully use a soldering iron with a flat chisel tip to gently heat the connections:
  • Run the soldering iron over the cable connector to reflow the solder and restore connections.
  • Be cautious not to overheat or damage the ribbon.
  • You should be able to see the lines returning as you go if done correctly
Allow the areas to cool ensuring the lines are restored. If a vertical line re-emerges, repeat this step.

Step 5

Test the Fix:

Once you're happy the lines have been restored, turn off the Game Boy and let the connections cool (5-10 minutes with good airflow).
Tip: Now is a great time to clean the dust and debris off the motherboard, components, and console housing using an air duster or pump. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean any stubborn stains and wipes to refresh the console housing. We recommend unscrewing the 4 screws from back side of the motherboard (the one with the battery terminals) from the housing to do this most effectively.
Power it back on to check if the lines have disappeared.
If not, repeat the reflow process on the affected areas.

    Step 6

    Reassemble the Game Boy:

Replace the rubber strip at the bottom of the screen.
Secure the screen board back onto the housing with screws.
Reattach the ribbon cable to the back shell.
Secure the Game Boy back together with the original six tri-wing screws.

    Step 7

    Final Testing:

Insert batteries and a working game cartridge.
Power on the Game Boy to confirm:
    • Vertical lines are gone.
    • Display, contrast wheel, buttons and sound function correctly.
Tip: This is a great time to replace the screen cover for new - ensure no dust or dirty is on the screen using an air duster if doing so

    Enjoy your refreshed Game Boy!
